Founding Board Member Amata Miller, IHM, PhD

Sr. Amata Miller
Sr. Amata is currently Professor of Economics and Director of the Myser Initiative on Catholic Identity at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN.  She holds the Archbishop Harry Flynn Distinguished Chair in Catholic Identity.  In addition she teaches in the Master of Social Justice program at Marygrove College in Detroit, MI.   She is also a member of the Global Economic Justice  Workshop Team of the Partnership for Global Justice in New York City.  She served as Financial Vice President of her religious congregation and later as Vice President for Finance and Administration at Marygrove College.  For six years she was Education Coordinator and Economic Analyst at NETWORK: A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby in Washington, DC.  She has served as Trustee or Director of many institutions including St. Edwards University, Marygrove College, Mercy Housing, Partners for the Common Good, NETWORK, Catholic Health Initiatives, Catholic Health Audit Network, Shorebank and Mary’s Pence.  In addition she has served as a member of finance and investment committees of several religious congregations and other institutions.

Sister Amata has received numerous awards for her community service from both civil and non-secular organizations, including a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship from the University of California, a Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, the Archbishop John R. Roach Award, from the Commission on Women of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, and the Monika Hellwig Award from the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.   She has received 3 honorary degrees and has numerous publications and speaking engagements to her credit.

Sr. Amata Miller holds a BA in mathematics from Marygrove College, an MA in economics from St. Louis University, and a PhD in economics from theUniversity of California at Berkeley.

For the past 30 years she has written and lectured extensively on domestic and global economic justice issues, socially responsible investment and  Catholic Social Teaching, both nationally and abroad.
