Austin, Texas
Austin Tan Cerca de la Frontera was formed to address social and economic injustice along the Texas/Mexico border particularly as they affect women and communities of color and to find community-driven alternatives through transnational solidarity and fair trade. Maquiladoras are predominantly U.S.-owned factories just south of the Mexican border that enable corporations to hire laborers for lower pay under lax labor laws. Austin Tan Cerca de la Frontera supports maquiladora women workers who are experiencing economic exploitation to form alliances and advocate for improved labor conditions and labor laws, human dignity, and fair trade. Austin Tan Cerca de la Frontera aims to expand the range of opportunities for women who are entangled in unjust systems to build solidarity across borders.
