Altagracia Faith and Justice Works (AFJW) started through the leadership and efforts of lay women of faith in New York to bridge the faith community and the broader Manhattan community. AFJW is located in a majority Hispanic/Latine immigrant community of Northern Manhattan and is dedicated to empowering community leaders to put their faith into action and promote social justice through faith formation, leadership development, service and advocacy opportunities, and community organizing to effect essential social change.
AFJW recognizes the underlying need for connection, relationships, and community-based solutions and responses to these needs through Parish-based Social Justice Ministry teams and Global Thinking, Local Action Universal Impact (GLU) youth service-learning and leadership program. Social Justice Ministry Teams work to address community issues, including affordable housing, tenant rights, homelessness, food insecurity/food justice, environmental justice, health equity, domestic violence, and anti-racism initiatives. While GLU empowers youth to be compassionate and confident leaders in service and work for social justice.
