Margins: Women Helping Black Women

Birmingham, Alabama

Margins: Women Helping Black Women resources women in Alabama by building infrastructures of care: the food, housing, childcare, and direct support systems that make dignity, stability, and collective flourishing possible.

Over 95% of Margins program participants are Black women or Black gender-expansive people living within the Birmingham, Alabama metro area. An estimated 80% of parents and caregivers and all are navigating overlapping challenges, including economic precarity, housing instability, and crisis events such as utility shutoffs, flooding, domestic violence, and family disruption shaped by state involvement.

Margins envisions an Alabama where Black women and their families live with stability, dignity and abundance — where safe housing, nourishing food, reliable childcare, and strong community support are not privileges but the everyday conditions that make rest, joy, and collective flourishing possible.
