The Chicago Hospitality Accountability and Advocacy Database Project (CHAAD) is an organization created by and for hospitality workers in Chicago to advance accountability and end labor abuses within the food and beverage industry. CHAAD nurtures an intentional community that provides affirmative and equitable resources for workers. Recent national data highlights that the hospitality industry is predominantly composed of women, with many workers being single heads of households. CHAAD’s programming focuses on two overarching strategies–harm reduction and future-building; they are testing new ideas for a sustainable and thriving hospitality industry, rooted in cooperation, mutual aid, and democratic structures. Their core ethos centers on amplifying workers’ voices and constantly surveying the community’s needs.
