The Chicago Hospitality Accountability and Advocacy Database Project (CHAAD)

The Chicago Hospitality Accountability and Advocacy Database Project (CHAAD) emerged in response to the widespread wage theft, gender-based violence, and systemic exploitation faced by women and nonbinary people working in the hospitality industry – particularly those who are Black, Brown, undocumented, disabled, queer, or low-income. CHAAD Project’s mission is to nurture an equitable future in the hospitality industry by organizing workers and providing resources, education, and advocacy. They hope to build an iindustry rooted in care, culture, and community, where workers are supported, valued, and empowered to lead systemic change.

With Mary’s Pence previous grant, CHAAD Project recently started hosting Rad•ish Eats, an experimental communal dinner series to reimagine the past and reexamine the present state of hospitality to redetermine its future as one that sustains all who participate. Using food and collaboration, Rad•ish Eats diners work to develop tools to analyze how labor, social justice, culture, and hospitality intersect. With this next grant, CHAAD Project expects to engage with 150+ hospitality workers through its reporting labor abuse tools, by offering real-time referrals and direct support for impacted workers, hosting Know Your Rights campaigns and legal clinics, and continuing to champion a worker advisory board and political education curriculum for the Movement to Organize Restaurant Equity (MORE).
